Taper's Notes (Andrew E.)

Anyway.....I taped this show in its entirety as well. My gear consists of a Sony TCD-D8 DAT and Core Sound Stealthy Cardioid mics with bass rolloff enabled. Taped the show from Sec 4, Row 12 (Alex's side). I think the show came out great except for a few issues. First of all, I may have imbibed a bit too much, cause it seems I may not have taped the show at 44.1kHz.

The Digital Dan
   (Audio - 8)

I had the first source used for this two source matrix for a while. It never really enthralled me, so I held out for additional sources and worked on other projects in the meantime. Finally I found a couple of other sources, one being really terrible (and discarded), with the other being of similar quality to the one I already had. To my surprise, the matrix of the two came out considerably better than either sources individually. One of the sources had a few drop out problems, but thanks to the matrix most listeners will probably never be able to figure out where, hence one of the benefits of a matrix. The mix is great and well balanced, but the venue acoustics do not allow for that "in your face" kind of mix so the vocals aren't as crisp as I would wish. The results are similar to the Toronto October matrix release. Once again, play loud or you'll miss a lot of the detail.

As for the performance, Philly has always been one of the boys favorite places to play and they almost always put on one of their better shows of the tour in the city of brotherly love (unless you are J.D. Drew). They definitely do not do anything to detract from that trend. They had altered the setlist a bit by the time of this show with "Freewill" and "The Trees" being the songs des jour. But Alex's rant during "La Villa" is a real highlight on this night and features one of Lerxst's best Freudian slips ever! It's really quite funny and one of the best of the entire tour. Once again, many thanks to Andrew and Slipkid for donating the DAT sources used for this production. As with all Digital Reproductions releases, this production is for free trade only and not to be bought, sold or distributed for profit. Please keep the spirit of trading alive and well.

LeeGeddy

A fine sounding matrix from 2 DAT recordings. It was somewhat difficult to grade this show, but overall it's a great sounding show. Neil's toms and cymbals are nice and crisp, and Alex comes though with clarity. Geddy's vocals aren't too upfront, though. The overall mix is good and heavy and very even throughout without anyone overpowering the other. Rush always puts on a great performance for the Philly crowd, and it really shows in this recording.
