The Digital Dan
   (Audio - 7, Video - 7.5)

This is a pretty good video from the opening night of the tour. I had initially wanted to replace the soundtrack or at least matrix it with the "First Impressions" release, but that proved to be nearly impossible to line up at this time. However, I was able to matrix the soundtrack with the soundtrack of another video from the same show (for which I had just the audio). The sound is pretty good and definitely listenable. The main drawback is that both sources are distant sounding, so the video does have some echo to it. The video itself is a 1st gen source that has a few problems. The first problem is that for the first 16min there are some audio tracking problems and a horizontal distortion line about 1/5th from the top. After that, the video is just fine starting with Cold Fire. The other problem stems from this being a 1 camera affair, there were some "black out" sections. These were filled in with video from other sections of the song with the same verses. It makes for a more seamless show to watch. The audio is uncut from start to finish as is the video, so this is the complete performance. There are sections where the audience gets in the way of the shot, but for the most part the filmer does an excellent job of avoiding them and getting fairly tight shots of Geddy and Alex. He even manages to get a tight shot of Neil for the drum solo.

Production Notes: The audio was converted to a Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo soundtrack and the video was encoded at a 4600 bit rate with a 2 pass variable bit rate encoding method. This is an excellent compromise between audio and video quality. The video and DVD is in NTSC video format, so our PAL friends will have to play this on their computers as it is still too difficult to produce a PAL version at this time. As with all Digital Reproductions releases, this is from free trade or blank media trade only! Do not buy, sell, or distribute for profit. If you see someone selling the release, please ask them to stop. Help keep the spirit of trading alive.    (2002-10-22)
