The Digital Dan
   (Audio - 8, Video - 8.5)

A very nice sounding show taken from a 1st gen VHS copy of the video. This is a virtually complete show from the second leg of the North American RtB tour. Thus, fans got the rare treat of hearing "Vital Signs", "The Analog Kid" and "The Trees" being reintroduced to the set list. The very beginning of "tSoR" is faded in and there are a few minor dropouts here and there (1/7s). The boys have a few interesting problems during the show, one of which is pretty evident at the beginning of "The Big Money" where the vocal effect gets triggered too early.

The video is nothing short of amazing. It is not only the best I've seen of the RtB tour, it is among the best audience shot videos of Rush ever filmed! The close ups are great, the filming is very steady for a pre-stabilization period of camcorders, and the performance is very good. There are relatively few crowd obstructions during the show, so the filming is pretty "dead on". It is filmed from about 30 degrees off parallel on Alex's side of the stage.

What's a good video without a good audio? The sound is amazing on this show. It is very consistent throughout the show given the location of the filmer to the speaker stacks. The high end is quite detailed and the bass has good impact and clarity. However, there is a little "crispyness" to the audio from time to time that prevent it from being rated higher. Combining the great audio and the great video, this recording is a must have for any serious Rush fan.

Production details. The video was transfered via firewire from a Sony TRV-340 directly to the computer. Video was edited in Adobe Premier Pro and the motion menus were done in Adobe AfterEffects. The video was finally encoded as MPeg2 using TMPEnc at 8000kbps CBR using all the highest quality settings. Total video mastering and compression time on an Athlon 2400 Barton base computer ran 52 hours. The audio was digitally remastered in Adobe Audition and output as 16bit/44.1khz SHN audio for the CD version and 448kbps Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo for the video soundtrack. Special thanks to Daneck for the slot machine picture used in the opening menu. This video release is the companion to the audio release. The CD audio version in lossless SHN format can be found on each DVD. The artworks for both the CD and DVD versions can be found on disc. MD5 Checksums are provided for both the DVD and the CD versions to help facilitate quality trading.

Once again, special thanks to Nelson for providing the source used and so many other sources over the years. Another round of applause to Daneck for the artwork designs on the CD and DVD case arts. As with all Digital Reproductions releases this is for free trade or blank media trade only. Please help keep the spirit of free trade alive and well.    (2004-09-07)

A pretty damn good video from the Roll the Bones tour. It's great to see the boys playing Xanadu, Finding my Way, and Anthem (although Geddy sings the latter terribly) again. The camera is very shakey at times, but mostly it is watchable. The guitar is a little too low in the mix for it to rank higher. Recommended.   (2004-10-20)
