The Digital Dan
   (Audio - 7, Video - 7.5)

Taken from a couple of 1st gen videos, this is Rush's full performances in Toronto for the Presto tour. Both videos are very steady and shot about 45 degrees of center on Geddy's side of the stage. The zoom close ups are very nice for the time and technology. The first night's show sounds much better than the second night's show. But the video's themselves are very similar in quality with great, unobstructed views. While the second night doesn't sound as good, it definitely is a lot better than some other video's I've seen from this tour.

Production Notes. The video's themselves were transfered to the computer via a Sony TRV-340 digital8 camcorder over firewire. All video editing was done in Adobe Premier and Adobe After Effects. All audio remastering was done in Cool Edit Pro. The video's were then encoded at 8000kbps Constant Bit Rate (CBR) mpeg2 video using TMPGEnc. The audio was encoded as Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo at 448kbps. This is a nice production, it was completed around December of 2003. However, the original motion menu's for this release were accidentally written over by an experimental motion menu. The originals were then deleted unwittingly. By the time the discs were authored and the error was discovered, it was too late to go back as the source files were long since removed. So the main motion menu is a bit of an embarassment, but shouldn't detract from the release other than visually.

Bonus features. There are a few bonus features included in this release. On disc 1 of the 1st night's show there is the soundcheck from the second night. It's about 9 minutes long and nothing revolutionary but interesting nonetheless. On disc 1 of the 2nd night's show is the inclusion of the open act's performance. This part of the tour had VoiVod opening, another Canadian pioneer much like Rush except in the thrash metal vein. Their set includes "The Unknown Knows", "Nothingface", "Tribal Convictions", "Astronomy Domine", "Missing Sequences" and "Inner Combustion". This looks to be a 2nd or 3rd gen source grafted onto the original 1st gen Rush video. Still, if you are a VoiVod fan like myself, you'll find this a cool treat. If you are not familiar with VoiVod, check out their cover of Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine" which is very well done. In addition, the artworks are also included on disc, but you'll need a dvd drive and a computer to get to them. Each dvd includes an MD5 checksum value that traders can use to verify the integrity of each disc to ensure perfect copies.

Once again, thanks to Derek R. for providing the video's used in this production and his patience for the long and strange trip these productions have seen. As with all Digital Reproductions releases, these are for free trade and blank media trade only. Please do not buy, sell, or distribute for profit. Help keep the spirit of trading alive and well. If you should see anyone trying to buy these shows, please turn them on to the world of free trade.    (2004-05-14)
